Caterham Bourne – 2024

Residents and businesses should be aware that the Environment Agency (EA) has issued a ‘Flood Alert’ for the Caterham Bourne which runs through Whyteleafe from south to north (and on to the river Wandle in London). There is a risk of flooding, for example, to basements due to higher than usual ground-water levels.

At this stage, it is a ‘warning and informing’ message to say that flooding is possible for anyone who may have experienced flooding in the past. Current observations and monitoring confirm that the Caterham Bourne is now flowing (in the channel) – this will help remove water from the area.

Going forward the EA, assisted by other agencies (Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council, Croydon Borough Council, SES Water and Whyteleafe Village Council) will continue to monitor and provide further updates.

Everyone should stay alert to the situation, particularly as we continue to have above average rainfall this winter. To stay updated visit: https://www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings
